There has been a lot of discussion about the difference between the formats of coaching and supervision for over 30 years. (e.g. SCHLEGEL 2003; the issue of Supervision 2007). The supervision format is more common in health and social service organizations., mostly for teams; we find the coaching format much more frequently in the private sector and there especially for managers. I’d prefer to call both a piece of professional advice. If both sides agree to call it supervision, often a longer time period of work is contracted. We might use this time to understand the (often unconscious) conflicts concerning role and collaboration. Precious time – if things go well (LYDING 2021) – for developing trusting reflection.
Practising Supervision can also include clarifying team conflicts. But here we are arriving at the edge to coaching. There, too, the goal is resolving conflicts, amid the individual and the group; conflicts about leadership and quality development.
In my understanding, the responsibility for meaningful and justifiable solutions (JOHNSSON 2007) is the most important aspect of my role. whether in coaching or in supervision – combined with building up a trusting relationship with my clients. The process starts with an examination of the aims both of the client and the organization.
In my opinion, it is also evident that while coaching or supervising our work is increasingly shaped by technological changes beyond imagination (BALDWIN 2019) and by cultural altercations in the west (SCHWAB 2020 or NACUN 2019 versus KOTKIN 2020 or MURRAY 2023). These developments do and will influence the everyday worklife. With my efforts I would like to contribute to bearable and appropriate compromises.
